The standout technical departure in this series, this 2022-dated work uses a charcoal black painted ground rather than the white paper substrate employed in the other lots. This dramatically changes the visual experience: delicate architectural forms in creams, pale blues, mauves, warm golds, and pinks emerge from the darkness like illuminated details from an ancient manuscript. Tower-like masses of interlocking curvilinear forms, arches, scrolls, serpentine ribbons, and building-like structures with pediments rise from the lower portion of the composition. The effect is more contemplative and jewel-like than the brighter white-ground works, with a compositional restraint that makes this piece the most formally sophisticated in the series.<br>
