Description / Overview:
The Bertone X1/9 is one of the few genuinely affordable mid-engine Italian sports cars of any era. Giorgetto Giugiaro's wedge-form design aged well, the targa roof packs away cleanly, and the mid-engine balance delivers handling that surprises people who expect a budget car. Production ran from 1972 under Fiat branding through to 1989 under Bertone's own name, with Series 2 cars like this one being among the last built.
This example has been fitted with a Lancia 2.0-litre engine and gearbox in place of the original 1.5-litre unit. It is a common and well-regarded upgrade that lifts performance meaningfully without disturbing the original mid-engine layout. The body presents well in white with straight panels, good gaps, and no obvious structural rust visible from exterior photos. The removable targa hardtop is in place. Wheels show some surface corrosion and the paint has aged to a flat chalky finish in places, but structurally the car appears honest.
Only one exterior photo was available at time of listing. Buyers should inspect in person to verify the engine swap quality, mechanical condition, and to check lower sills, floor pans, battery tray, and rear quarters, which are the known rust areas on the X1/9 platform. At current bidding this is a candidate for a mechanical driver or a restoration project.
