Description

The 1967-69 first-generation Camaro is one of the most universally loved muscle cars ever built. Chevrolet designed it to fight the Mustang and ended up creating a legend. The SS (Super Sport) package put it in the performance conversation from day one, and the convertible variant is the one people dream about. Open top, big motor, rear-wheel drive, manual gearbox. This is about as classic as American muscle gets.

This car tells a well-documented story. Originally factory butternut yellow with a 327 and Powerglide, it received a frame-off restoration in Sacramento, California, around 2008-2009, before being purchased in 2010 and brought to Perth in 2013. The current owner has maintained a detailed service and modification log over many years, which is exactly what you want to see with a restomod of this calibre. The build reads like a proper enthusiast's work: GM Performance ZZ4 crate motor with aluminium heads and K&N filter, BeCool aluminium radiator, MSD ignition, Thorley headers, Flowmaster exhaust, Moser 12-bolt rear end with 3.73 gears, Richmond 6-speed manual, full Hotchkis suspension package (front drop spindles, new springs, subframe connectors, rear leaf springs, front and rear sway bars), and a full SSBC four-wheel disc brake system. These are not cheap parts and they are not random choices. Someone who knows Camaros built this.

The exterior presents exceptionally well. Deep metallic blue paint with dual cream rally stripes, applied to a straight and properly prepared body. Panel gaps are consistent, which is impressive on a convertible Camaro because these unibody drop-tops flex and fight you the whole way. The chrome is bright, all SS badging is in place, the American Racing Torq Thrust-style wheels look exactly right on this car, and the red brake calipers visible behind the wheels confirm the upgraded disc setup. The black convertible top is down and stowed with a proper boot cover, which is a detail many restomods skip. Interior is a complete black refresh with original cocktail shakers reportedly still in both front and rear, which is a rare and charming survivor detail.

In terms of value, a well-documented frame-off first-gen Camaro SS convertible restomod with this calibre of running gear typically trades in the $75,000-$110,000 AUD range. This is not a matching-numbers car, and the colour has been changed from the original butternut yellow, which collectors should note. But as a driver, a show car, and a genuine joy machine it is hard to argue with what is in front of you.
