The fourth-generation Celica is one of the best looking shapes Toyota ever penned. The ST162 SX Liftback, with its razor-sharp wedge profile and pop-up headlights, was the car that brought genuine twin-cam performance to the affordable end of the Australian sports car market in the late 1980s. Powered by the 3S-GE Twin Cam 16 with Toyota's T-VIS variable intake system, these were serious driver's cars that punched well above their price point when new, and clean examples are becoming genuinely difficult to find.
This is an Australian-delivered example, compliance-plated in June 1989, finished in a light blue-silver metallic (colour code 8G2) that suits the angular lines of the liftback body beautifully. The paint holds reasonable gloss across all panels with no visible rust, dents, or significant damage anywhere on the body. The factory side decals with the distinctive burgundy gradient stripe and "2.0 TWIN CAM 16" lettering are intact on both sides. All badges are present and legible. The pop-up headlights sit flush in their retracted position, and the factory alloy wheels in the turbine-style 5-spoke design are fitted all round with tyres showing adequate tread. The panels are straight, the shut lines are even, and the body presents as an honest, well-preserved original.
Under the bonnet, the 3S-GE Twin Cam 16 with T-VIS intake sits in a completely stock engine bay. The "TOYOTA 2000 TWIN CAM 16" cam cover lettering is intact, red spark plug leads cross the top, and a factory gold-finished strut tower brace spans the bay. Everything appears factory original with no aftermarket modifications whatsoever. The engine bay shows accumulated grime and dust consistent with storage but no visible leaks or corrosion.
The interior is a standout. The dark navy blue dashboard is remarkably intact with no visible cracking, which is exceptional for an Australian-market car of this vintage. The factory head unit, climate controls, and instrument cluster are all original and in place. The rear seats in their herringbone-pattern cloth are in very good condition with no tears. The front seats are fitted with tan aftermarket seat covers, likely protecting the original upholstery beneath. The factory steering wheel with "TWIN CAM" centre boss, the chrome-topped manual shift knob, and the cruise control stalk are all present and correct. The odometer reads 159,214 km. This car appears to have lived an easy life.
These ST162 SX Celicas are becoming collector items in their own right. The combination of the high-revving twin-cam engine, 5-speed manual, pop-up headlights, and that unmistakable 1980s wedge profile makes them desirable in a way that few affordable Japanese sports cars from this era can match. Finding one this original and this straight is increasingly rare.
