Description

The second-generation Plymouth Barracuda is one of the great American fastbacks. That signature wraparound rear window, the long bonnet, the low stance. Chrysler built the 1968 model as a genuine performance car in its own right, not just a Valiant with a fancy roof. This one started life as a factory 383ci V8 car out of Hamtramck, confirmed by the VIN and fender tag, and somebody has taken that solid starting point and turned it into a serious street machine.



Under the functional hood scoop sits a 451 cubic inch big block stroker built by APM. The spec list reads like a who's who of quality parts: Scat steel crank, Scat rods, forged pistons, Howards hydraulic roller cam, aluminium heads, Crane roller rockers, big Milodon sump, and an XP 950 Holley breathing through a K&N style open element filter. ICE ignition system handles the spark. Vendor claims 500 horsepower at the rear wheels. Behind the engine sits a 727 Torqueflite built by Protrans with a full manual reverse-pattern valve body, 3800 TCE converter, and large trans cooler, shifted via a B&M Pro Ratchet on the floor. A 9-inch diff with 3.7 gears and a 31-spline Truetrac centre puts the power down. The front end runs a Freak Ride setup with adjustable tubular upper and lower control arms, rack-and-pinion steering with electric power assist, and fully adjustable Viking coilovers. Wilwood brakes handle stopping duties. This is a properly engineered car, not a weekend bolt-on job.



The paint is outstanding. Deep, wet orange with excellent gloss across every panel. Straight body, tight gaps, no orange peel, no runs. This is a full respray, not the factory colour (fender tag shows paint code H5X), but the quality of the work is top shelf. Chrome bumpers front and rear are in excellent condition. The "Barracuda" script and V8 fish badge on the quarter panel are polished and correct. The car sits on dark-finish multi-spoke alloy wheels with low-profile performance tyres that fill the guards nicely.



Inside is a black vinyl bench seat front and rear, consistent with the fender tag trim code JJ1. The vinyl is in excellent condition with no cracking, tears, or significant wear. Door cards are period-correct with horizontal line detailing. The original dash layout has been retained with an aftermarket tachometer added to the instrument pod and Auto Meter oil pressure and water temperature gauges mounted below the dash on the passenger side. A wood-rim three-spoke steering wheel replaces the factory item. Black carpet throughout is clean and unworn. The boot is clean and lined, with the battery relocated to the rear.



The engine bay is tidy and well-presented. Body colour inner guards, large aluminium radiator with twin Spal electric fans, neatly routed wiring, and a clean presentation overall. The ICE ignition box is mounted on the passenger side firewall. Red spark plug leads add a splash of colour.
