Description
The Fiat 1400 was a landmark car for Fiat and for Italy. Launched in 1950, it was the first Fiat designed entirely in-house after the war, and the first mass-produced Italian car with full unitary body construction. Styled by Dante Giacosa with independent front suspension, hydraulic brakes, and a modern flat-floor interior, the 1400 represented Fiat's leap into the modern automotive era. It was the car that proved Italy could build more than just small economy vehicles. Production ran from 1950 to 1958, and survivors today are genuinely rare, particularly outside Europe.
This example is presented in deep black with good gloss and panel alignment across the distinctive fastback body. The steel wheels are fitted with correct Fiat hubcaps. Chrome bumpers front and rear are in presentable condition. The interior features red vinyl seating in reasonable order across both front and rear benches, with the original round instrument cluster (speedometer, fuel gauge, ammeter, temperature gauge) all intact. The large two-spoke steering wheel carries the Fiat horn emblem in its centre. The horizontal ribbed dashboard detailing, "1400" chrome script badge, glovebox, and pull-knob controls are all present and period-correct. Aftermarket oil pressure and water temperature gauges have been added below the dashboard for monitoring. The column-shift manual transmission lever is in place. Carpets show wear consistent with age, with rubber floor mats supplementing.
Under the bonnet sits the original 1.4-litre inline-four with a UNI air filter. The engine bay is complete and presents in honest, running condition. The boot contains spare parts, a useful bonus for a car this rare. Owned and preserved by a private collector, this Fiat 1400 is a genuine piece of postwar automotive history. Very few made it to Australia, and fewer still survive in this condition. For the serious collector or the Italian car enthusiast looking for something nobody else will have at the next concours or Italian car day, this is it.
