1964 MGB Roadster - Red - Early Pull-Handle, Overdrive, Wire Wheels
Price Guide: $12,000 - $18,000
1964 MGB Roadster, 1798cc B-Series 4-cylinder petrol, 4-speed manual with overdrive, red, right-hand drive, 02,580 miles indicated.
Description
The early pull-handle MGB is the one the purists want. Built before the design changes started stacking up, the Mark I cars from 1962 to late 1964 are the lightest and most direct expression of what the Abingdon team intended. This 1964 example carries two of the most desirable factory options straight out of the gate: overdrive and wire wheels. The chassis prefix GHN3 and engine code 18GR-U-H confirm both the car's identity and its higher-compression export engine specification. For the MG faithful, that combination on an early pull-handle body is a genuinely worthwhile starting point.
Finished in red, believed to be the original Tartan Red, the paint is honest but showing its age. There is visible fading and oxidation across the panels, with some areas showing primer or filler beneath the topcoat, and the lower rear wheel arches display the early corrosion that is a known weak point on these cars. The chrome bumpers, grille, and trim are all present and structurally intact, though dulled with time. Wire wheels with knock-off spinners are fitted at all four corners and appear serviceable. Inside, the black vinyl seats are in reasonable shape with no major tears. An aftermarket three-spoke sport steering wheel, an aftermarket radio/CD unit, and an aftermarket roll bar behind the seats are fitted. The original British Jaeger instruments are in place with the speedometer showing 02,580 miles on its five-digit dial. A note on the odometer: the trip meter reads 3,057 miles, which is higher than the main odometer reading, suggesting the main instrument may have been replaced at some point. The convertible soft top is included and stored in the boot alongside a spare wire wheel and jack, and a lovely MG-branded leather key fob accompanies two keys.
Restored early MGBs with overdrive and wire wheels have been achieving strong results, with a comparable 1964 MGB selling for USD $28,000 on Bring a Trailer in September 2024. Even in project or driver condition, the combination of early pull-handle body, overdrive, and wire wheels puts this car in a sought-after category. It will need paint and bodywork attention to realise its potential, but the bones are right and the key specification boxes are ticked.
