Description
The AM General HMMWV is one of the most recognisable military vehicles ever built. Originally developed for the US Army in the early 1980s, the M998 was the standard cargo and troop carrier variant with a 1.25 tonne payload capacity. This example carries serial number 186721 and wears its three-tone NATO camouflage with the kind of presence that stops traffic. The 6.5 litre turbocharged Detroit Diesel V8 underneath is the same engine that powered thousands of these machines across every theatre of operation, and it is known for its low-end torque, mechanical simplicity and long service life.
The vehicle presents well in its refreshed camouflage scheme across all panels. The paint shows good coverage with some variation between panels consistent with a field-level repaint rather than a factory finish. All body panels are straight with no evidence of collision damage. The riveted aluminium body construction is intact throughout. The engine bay is clean and dry with no visible leaks. Both batteries are present, hoses appear supple, and the turbocharger and intercooler system are complete. The interior is authentic military spec with OD green throughout, two-position seating, and the original instrument cluster including speedometer, oil pressure, temperature, fuel and voltmeter gauges. The odometer reads 8,443 miles. A Dixson tachometer with hour meter is fitted, reading approximately 6,596 hours, which is consistent with a vehicle that spent significant time idling or in stationary generator use. Tyres are aggressive mud terrain pattern with good tread depth across all four corners. The undercarriage is clean with no significant corrosion visible.
Genuine low-mileage Humvees are becoming increasingly collectible. The M998 is the purest expression of the platform before civilian comforts diluted the formula.
