Built by Chrysler Australia at the Tonsley Park factory in South Australia, the Dodge AT4 Metro Van is a genuine piece of Australian commercial vehicle history. This 1972 AT4-114 (114-inch wheelbase) wears its body-off restoration with pride. The build plate confirms August 1972 production and the van has been with one owner since 1979, having previously served with the Victorian Government. Comprehensive body-off work has removed all rust and the entire body has been refinished in quality two-pack white paint. The result is impressive, with deep gloss, crisp body lines and consistent panel gaps across the cab and van body.
Under the cab sits Chrysler Australia's 245 cubic inch Hemi inline six, mated to a four-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels through a heavy-duty three-tonne driveline. The engine bay is functional rather than show-detailed, with the exhaust manifold showing honest patina and some surface grime, but everything appears mechanically sound. The cab interior has been re-trimmed with tan ribbed vinyl bench seating, two-tone door cards with chrome hardware, and a cream three-spoke steering wheel with the original Dodge Ram horn button. A JVC head unit has been fitted for modern audio. The rear cargo compartment has been thoughtfully customised with full carpet throughout, built-in storage benches with latching compartments along both sides, and practical lighting.
