A remarkably clean original example of the final-generation G-body Pontiac Grand Prix, one of the last true full-size American personal luxury coupes to wear the nameplate.


Description

The G-body Pontiac Grand Prix ran from 1978 through to 1987, and the final few years represented the nameplate at its most refined. By 1987, Pontiac had sorted the aerodynamics, the interior quality, and the powertrain options into a package that balanced American luxury with genuinely practical everyday transport. The 3.8-litre naturally aspirated V6, paired to a smooth three-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive, is a low-stress combination that has proved exceptionally durable over the decades. These are not high-strung performance cars. They are comfortable, refined personal coupes that cruise all day without complaint.


This particular example presents in gold metallic with a two-tone vinyl panel at the C-pillar and rear roof area, a period-signature styling element of the late G-body cars. The exterior paint holds good reflective gloss across all panels with the body lines remaining straight. Chrome wire-spoke wheels on P195/75R14 tyres complete the period look at all four corners. Inside, the car is in remarkably original condition. Split bucket seats in tan cloth with leather bolsters show minimal wear, the headliner is intact and clean, the carpets are in good shape throughout, and the wood-grain dashboard trim presents well. The centre console houses the Delco AM/FM stereo cassette unit with auto reverse and the air conditioning controls, with a full complement of analogue gauges including oil pressure, coolant temperature, voltmeter, and fuel level. The 3.8-litre V6 in the engine bay shows the honest grime of a working engine but appears complete and unmolested.


Surviving examples of the late G-body Grand Prix in this condition are genuinely uncommon in Australia. These were never officially sold new here, and the ones that made it across as private imports have largely been used and modified. A clean, original example like this one offers a genuine slice of 1980s American coupe culture at a fraction of what comparable condition vehicles command in the US market.
