Description:

1983 Toyota Celica Supra A60 Liftback - Silver - 140,287km - 2.8i Inline-Six, Automatic, AMI-Assembled, Highly Original

Price Guide: $27,000 - $42,000

Genuine Australian-assembled A60 Celica Supra with 2.8-litre inline-six, liftback body, functioning original digital dash, and remarkably well-preserved interior.

Description

The A60 Celica Supra was a different beast to the standard Celica of the same era. Where the regular Celica used a four-cylinder, the Supra carried Toyota's 5M-GE inline-six producing around 112kW in 2.8-litre "2.8i" form, giving it a character and pace that stood apart from its more common sibling. Australian examples were assembled locally by Australian Motor Industries (AMI) in Port Melbourne, making them specifically ADR-compliant right-hand-drive builds rather than grey imports. The compliance plate on this car confirms exactly that: Toyota Celica Supra Liftback, MA61 chassis, November 1983, assembled by AMI. These cars are now legitimately rare, with the combination of AMI provenance and the inline-six Supra specification placing them in genuine collector territory.

Photos confirm the car presents extremely well for its age. The silver metallic paint holds strong gloss across all panels, the body lines are straight and the panel gaps are consistent. The "2.8i" and "Supra" rear badges are intact and clearly visible. Inside, the interior is genuinely impressive for a 40-year-old car. The original blue and grey striped fabric seats show minimal wear, the automatic climate control system is present, and the factory electronic digital instrument cluster is functioning, displaying the odometer reading of 140,287km correctly, which is a notable achievement given how fragile these digital dashes typically are at this age. There is aftermarket ambient lighting fitted under the dash and console, and the steering wheel has been fitted with an aftermarket wrap, but otherwise the cabin appears largely original and unmolested. The engine bay shows the expected patina of age.

Finding an A60 Celica Supra in this state of preservation is not straightforward. Comparable Australian-delivered examples in good condition have traded between $18,000 and $30,000, with the most original survivors commanding the stronger end. This example's AMI compliance, functioning digital dash, clean exterior and well-preserved interior put it in solid territory for the serious enthusiast.
