Price Guide: $75,000 - $100,000

1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS. Left-hand drive. ZZ4 aluminium-head 350ci crate motor, 375 horsepower. Richmond 6-speed manual. Two-door convertible. Odometer reads 6,100 miles (vendor advises under 15,000 miles on current gauges). Currently registered in WA until August 2026.

Description

The first-generation Camaro SS convertible is one of those cars that needs no introduction. Chevrolet built it to fight the Mustang and ended up creating a legend. Open top, big motor, rear-wheel drive, manual gearbox, and 1968 styling that has never gone out of fashion. The convertible variant is the one collectors dream about, and an SS-badged example with documented build history is exactly the kind of car that attracts serious bidders.

This car tells a well-documented story. Originally factory butternut yellow with a 327 and Powerglide, it received a frame-off restoration in Sacramento, California, around 2008 to 2009, before being purchased in 2010, brought to Australia in 2013, and maintained by the current owner with a detailed service and modification log. The build reads like a proper enthusiast's work: GM Performance ZZ4 crate motor confirmed by GM Performance Parts intake manifold branding visible in the engine bay, BeCool aluminium radiator, MSD ignition, Thorley headers, Flowmaster exhaust, Moser 12-bolt rear end with 3.73 gears, Richmond 6-speed manual, full Hotchkis suspension package with front drop spindles, and a complete SSBC four-wheel disc brake system with red-painted calipers visible through the wheels. These are not budget parts and they are not random choices. Someone who knows Camaros built this car. The cowl/firewall Fisher Body tag confirms a genuine 1968 Camaro convertible body (style code 12467, Lordstown assembly), supporting the car's provenance. The Australian personally-imported vehicle compliance label documents the 2013 import.

The exterior presents exceptionally well. Deep metallic blue paint with dual cream rally stripes applied to a straight, properly prepared body. Panel gaps are consistent throughout, which is impressive on a convertible Camaro because these unibody drop-tops flex and fight you the whole way. The chrome is bright, all SS badging is in place, and the American Racing Torq-Thrust-style wheels look exactly right on this car. The black convertible top is down and properly stowed with a boot cover fitted. Inside, the black vinyl bucket seats are clean and tight, the Richmond 6-speed sits in a period-style centre console, the Dakota Digital gauges display clearly, and the Pioneer stereo with Blaupunkt amp is tucked into the dash. Vendor advises the original cocktail shakers are still in place front and rear, which is a rare and charming survivor detail on any restored first-gen Camaro.

This is not a matching-numbers car, the original colour was butternut yellow, and the engine is the ZZ4 crate rather than the factory unit. Buyers who want an exact-numbers restoration should look elsewhere. Buyers who want a well-documented, properly built, genuinely exciting Camaro SS convertible that was put together with quality parts and real knowledge are looking at the right lot. Well-documented frame-off first-gen Camaro SS convertible restomods with this calibre of running gear typically trade in the AUD $75,000 to $110,000 range. Registered in WA until August 2026, with transfer form available for WA buyers.
