Description
The Ford Zephyr Mk II is one of the more elegant British family cars of the late 1950s, and a model that deserves more attention than it typically receives. Ford launched the second-generation Zephyr in 1956, and it quickly established itself as a spacious, capable family car with genuine performance credentials for the era. The 2.6-litre straight six was the largest engine in Ford's British lineup at the time, and the Zephyr's combination of smooth styling, four-door practicality, and mechanical simplicity made it a popular choice across the Commonwealth. Surviving Mk IIs in good condition are genuine collector pieces today, with the chrome-laden 1959 examples sitting right at the peak of the model's styling.
This Zephyr is one of the best-presented examples you'll see at auction. The interior is equally impressive: the blue-teal vinyl bench seat appears clean and well-preserved, the original three-spoke steering wheel with Zephyr horn badge is in place, the original Zephyr script dash badge is intact, and the heater and radio control fascia retains its original chrome and rotary knobs. Seatbelts have been retrofitted to both front positions, a practical and sensible modification that doesn't affect originality elsewhere. The engine bay houses the original 2.6-litre inline six with a new battery fitted. There is surface rust on the engine block and ancillaries consistent with a running but unrestored engine bay, though the overall presentation is well above average. The odometer reads 43,973 miles, and the body-to-chrome relationship across the car is consistent with that figure being genuine.
