Description:

1961 Volkswagen Beetle Manx Convertible - Red Metallic - 1.6L Air-Cooled Flat-4, 4-Speed Manual - Rare Registered Example

A genuine Manx-style dune buggy conversion on a VW Beetle platform, road registered in QLD. 2-seat open-top with soft top hood, right-hand drive.

Overview

The Manx dune buggy is one of the iconic vehicles of the 1960s. Bruce Meyers designed the original Meyers Manx in 1964 in California, grafting a lightweight fiberglass body onto a shortened VW Beetle floor pan to create a machine that was fast, fun and practically indestructible. The Manx concept took off immediately and spawned hundreds of similar conversions, with the VW flat-4 platform providing the perfect base. This example brings that spirit to Australia, presenting as a well-constructed Manx-style conversion on a 1961 Beetle chassis, with genuine QLD registration history per the vendor.

The red metallic fiberglass body holds excellent gloss throughout with no visible cracking or delamination from the photos. The distinctive Manx profile is all there: the swept flowing guards, chrome nerf bars along the sides, round headlights on stalks, chrome push bar at the front with two auxiliary driving lights, and the open rear tail section exposing the engine. The black soft top with clear plastic side curtains and rear window is structurally intact. Amber round indicators front and rear add period-correct detail. A tubular steel rear bumper frame with towball is fitted. The front wheels run standard Firestone tyres with chrome VW hubcaps, while the rear carries large ADVProMT GT Radial mud terrain tyres on matching VW steel wheels.

The interior is functional and characterful. An aftermarket three-spoke steering wheel with orange and wood-effect rim sits ahead of the original VDO speedometer and instrument cluster. A Power Axis marine audio unit has been fitted to the dash alongside the original light switch. Toggle switches on the right side of the dash control additional functions. The four-speed floor shifter is in the correct position. Bucket seats carry some wear consistent with use. The chassis number 1112565106 and engine number F1149513 are recorded per QLD registration paperwork. Vendor advises the vehicle has been previously registered in Queensland and is sold unregistered.
