The HQ Ute, Done Right
Built in September 1973 and now running a comprehensively upgraded drivetrain, this HQ Coupe Utility is one of those rare examples where the previous owner spent money in exactly the right places. The factory underpinnings are solid, the body is honest, and the mechanical package turns a classic ute into something genuinely practical for 2026 roads.
Power comes from a Holden 304 cubic inch V8 fitted with a VS-series sequential fuel injection system, an upgrade that transforms cold starting, fuel economy and on-road driveability compared to carburettor-fed alternatives. The vendor advises the conversion has been engineered. Backing it up is a Turbo 700 4-speed automatic transmission, an upgrade over the factory Trimatic that brings stronger gearing and improved reliability under load. The vendor also advises the rear axle has been fitted with a limited-slip differential, power steering has been fitted, and a new 2.5-inch exhaust system has been installed. Front and rear suspension has been replaced, making this a ute that handles with considerably more confidence than standard.
Inside, the interior has been re-trimmed in tan vinyl with matching carpet, giving a clean period-correct look that suits the HQ cabin.
